Honestly, Nevermind
Drake
this is drake’s (kinda surprise) 7th studio album, Honestly, Nevermind. have a look at how it stacks up to his other studio album covers (not mixtapes)—
again—drakes my fav artist of all time (save your breath you ninnies) so i love his covers, but there’s a couple duds. thank me later is dated and unimaginative, scorpion is just boring, just a pic of drake w his signature lol. i love CLB as much as everyone hates it, i think it’ll age funnily and we’ll all remember when it dropped and the discourse around it. its fitting for DRAKE, the meme guy rapper, drake basically is a fuckin emoji isn’t he. take care, NWTS, and views are his best, NWTS being my favorite. take care is so crazy fitting for the music on the album, and same with views. i can’t help but think of that hazy greyish blue when listening.
the Honestly, Nevermind cover was done by Ben Dorado, an art director, graphic designer and illustrator based in Paris, France.
he appears to have worked on the tracklist graphic (right) for Dark Lane Demo Tapes, drake’s 2020 collection of rough drafts and loosies. the cover (left) was shot by Theo Skudra, one of drake’s main photographers and directors.
Ben has this interesting blasted and bloated graphic style about his work that you can see throughout. he doesn’t seem to post that much on his insta, and i can’t find a portfolio website, so we just have this small sample and his drake work.
his pieces are extremely graphic-forward, which i love to shit ofc!! his stuff makes me wanna experiment more with textures and abstract shapes in this way, seeing what i can pull from it.
i have to imagine he also did the back cover/tracklist? this is actually killer, i love this shit!! love how the custom script type follows drake’s figure down the page, and the hazy edit of the photo. the type on the bottom is kinda awkward, and i wish they had utilised some simple margins for balance in placement. the type is kerned a bit too wide for no reason, and the baseline isn’t lined up with the OVO Sound logo. these kinds of imperfections bother me so much cuz i put so much effort myself into the tiny details, so to see the biggest artist on the planet’s graphics lack this same attention is demoralising honestly…
we can see this visual thread continued in the Honestly, Nevermind cover art, with its fuzzed out and grainy chrome type. if the type was just chrome and didn’t have the textural additions, i think it would be extremely derivative and boring.
it reminds me of something you might see on some streetwear, no? because drake mentions virgil in the album, samples him, and dedicates the album to him in the apple music liner note, this assumption isn’t totally impossible!
for instance, doesn’t this look super believable and like something you might see in LA???? this is what i thought of immediately. i wouldn’t be surprised if you saw this exact hoodie on drake’s store in a month lol.
🚨BREAKING RED ALERT ATTENTION🚨
just as i was writing this drake posted these merch pieces on his insta !!!!! holy shit !!!
duuuude if these are legit and these come out, this is the best merch drake will have ever released. but it just makes you think lol, drake knows his old albums are way better than his recent material (coming from a literal stan), but maybe he just doesn't care idk.
we’ve also gotten these tees, which are in visual reference to drake’s 2016 “REVENGE” Summer Sixteen merch.
i’d wear this actually lol. always liked the revenge tee, and love the forest camo print.
overall thoughts
sometimes its hard for me to have fair opinions on drake, as he’s been my favorite artist for like a decade now, but i do like this cover. the graphic work is really nice to me, i don’t think i could do it myself honestly. i’ve seen some people like it, others not, but i think it’s fitting for drake, and this album, as it’s shiny and glossy like the music on the record. the title is interesting too and so drakey lol. its petty and sassy and a little immature in its dismissive nature, but sums up drake’s ever-present “no friends in the industry” attitude.
the merch is nice so far, i hope those black tees with the “old stuff” type releases, they’ll def sell out and be price gauged but eh. we will see.
what do you guys think????? how does this stack up to drake’s other covers?? tell me why you think the album is trash !!!
quick cover shoutouts
just a little segment to show off some quick hard ass covers without giving them a full article lol.
i do not know who did this Cheat Codes cover, but holy literal shit bro this is one of my favorite covers ive seen in like 5 years lmaooo. this just LOOKS like a classic doesn’t it???? that green and red circle is so iconic, what a great choice.
for the 5 - 3 - 8 cover, i just love the graphic and designy nature of it, i love the heavy grid in use. the colours are gorgeous and thrown up against those abstract textures !! so nice. its done by Daniel Castrejón, check him out!!
